Love in the Time of Cholera

Love in the Time of Cholera

Author: Gabriel Garcia Marquez

ISBN-10: 0307389731
ISBN-13: 978-0307389732

I think a lot of the online reviewers of this book don’t realize that this book is not about the relationship of Fermina and Florentino. The book is about love in all of its forms, and the characters in the book exist as vehicles to examine the strangest and most powerful of all human emotions. Love in the Time of Cholera is about: unrequited love (Florentino for Fermina); marital love (Fermina and Juvenal); platonic love (Florentino and Leona); angry love (Florentino and the poet who makes him so furious); jealous love (the adulterous wife killed because of her affair with Florentino); young love (Florentino and Fermina in the beginning); dangerous love (the mental patient and Florentino); adulterous love (Juvenal and his affair, Florentino and many of his women); love from afar (Florentino and Fermina); elderly love (Florentino and Fermina, Fermina and Juvenal; the cyanide suicide); May-December love (Florentino and his ward); the relationship between sex, age, society, art, death and love (pretty much the whole book).

I could go on, but you get the idea. Any attempt to read this book as the story of Florentino and Fermina misses the point. The book is still very enjoyable that way, but look beyond the surface and enjoy Marquez’ ruminations on that thing called love that drives us all crazy.

Incidentally, I think it’s one of the best books ever written.

“The Astrology of Sex and the Sexes”

ISBN-10: 0060586311
ISBN-13: 978-0060586317

I am an astrology book junkie, and this one is very interesting to say the least. it is loads of fun for everyone to read. the style is refreshingly open and down-to-earth, yet it also goes deeper than other books i have read.
i had a hard time with this book in the sense that my pet peeve is when it is obvious that the author(s) are biased about a certain sign or group of signs and they portray these signs in more of a negative light than the others. Lets face it, we all have our light and dark traits, none of which are more beautiful or uglier than our brother’s and sister’s of different signs. if i were really the bratty, self-centered, steeley eyed, compassionless aries that the authors portray, i might as well jump off a cliff. I mean, I laughed aloud when i read this simply because it made me out to be such an […] Some of it I could identify with, others things seemed to be the the realm of an aries prototype concentrated times 1000. Lets remember that astrological signs are TENDANCIES, not a black and white road map to a person’s personality. if the world consisted of 12 different personalities as rigidly described in detail as they are in this book, we would have a pretty boring world indeed! people are much more complex than that! that is why it bothers me to see such generalizations. also because we all have other astrological elements that play into who we are… what about our rising sign, moon, venus and mars? Wouldn’t those planetary aspects be factored into a book that represents this term, ‘sextrology‘? maybe it is my moon in libra, thinking this all a little bit unfair….

this is a entertaining coffee table book that is good for a few laughs. it has a few points of validity here and there that will certainly cause a few ‘ahhhh’s’ but in the big picture please remember, if you want to REALLY know how ‘you are’ don’t rely on some trendy sun sign book to tell you. Get your entire chart done by a professional.

Chocolates and Confections

Chocolates and Confections

“At Home with The Culinary Institute of America”

ISBN-10: 0470189576
ISBN-13: 978-0470189573

I have a lot of cookbooks, many of which are candy and dessert books. I’ve been freelance (just do it!!) cooking for most of my life, including having made pull-taffy with my mom as a child. Over the years, I have had good and bad luck with various attempts at candymaking. Some of my divinity comes out perfect, some is dry. Pralines that are creamy, some that are grainy. Fudge that is perfectly made and some that is hard and short. What gives? This book does. It has a full explanation of all techniques to be used at the beginning of each chapter, before you even get to the recipes. This is great because it helps you resist the temptation to just jump into trying something; after all, it must be important for you to know a technique if they tell you before they give you the recipe in which you will use that technique. It actually repeats everything for you because before the recipes, it goes through the entire process without measurements so that you can’t make it at that point! I found that I actually read the entire book, cover to cover, before even attempting anything. My chocolate tempered perfectly, which was the first thing I did. Next will be either cherry cordials or maybe more divinity.
I feel much more confident in my ability to create perfect confections. Perfect every time. There are also a lot of recipes for confections I’d never considered, as well as ones I’d never heard of. All because I don’t just know what I want to do, but how to do it, and why it works. Lots of history, interesting asides, and very clear instructions. All in all, a definite must-have.

The Next Decade

The Next Decade

“Where We’ve Been . . . and Where We’re Going”

ISBN-10: 0385532946
ISBN-13: 978-0385532945

The author of the acclaimed New York Times bestseller The Next 100 Years now focuses his geopolitical forecasting acumen on the next decade and the imminent events and challenges that will test America and the world, specifically addressing the skills that will be required by the decade’s leaders.

The next ten years will be a time of massive transition. The wars in the Islamic world will be subsiding, and terrorism will become something we learn to live with. China will be encountering its crisis. We will be moving from a time when financial crises dominate the world to a time when labor shortages will begin to dominate. The new century will be taking shape in the next decade.

In The Next Decade, George Friedman offers readers a provocative and endlessly fascinating prognosis for the immediate future. Using Machiavelli’s The Prince as a model, Friedman focuses on the world’s leaders—particularly the American president—and with his trusted geopolitical insight analyzes the complex chess game they will all have to play. The book also asks how to be a good president in a decade of extraordinary challenge, and puts the world’s leaders under a microscope to explain how they will arrive at the decisions they will make—and the consequences these actions will have for us all.
